Hitmen Game Day: Must-Win Blah Blah Blah

First appearance of the doom-and-gloom tags already. Shit, this is a record.

2 4 1 1
6 0 4 2

Had I known that Cody Sylvester and Victor Rask were injured (along with Rob Trzynkowski and Calder Brooks, but they’re less important), I might have been less enthusiastic about the Hitmen’s chances in the first round. Sure, you hate to use injuries as an excuse, but at the same time, nearly any team in any league would be hard pressed to maintain their customary level with two top-six and four top-nine forwards out of action. The return of Sylvester tonight is cause for hope, to be sure, as it gives at least one or two guys a chance to step back into more comfortable roles. But the bottom line here is, the Hitmen need to get an early lead. They did it in Game 2, forced Brandon to get aggressive, and the longer the game went on, the more unhinged the Wheaties became. While I don’t expect a parade to the box necessarily, forcing Brandon to take more chances is naturally going to create more chances for Calgary: that’s Playing With The Lead 101. We’ve already seen what Brandon’s capable of with an early lead: they’ll let you back into the contest, and after you burn yourself out doing so, they’ll step on your throat in the back half of the game. Yes, they’ve gotten help from the officials in both victories, but even with that factor aside, Calgary’s just looked outmatched and outworked in the latter 30 minutes of both games they’ve lost, and it’s showed in the flurry of late goals (6 GA in the second halves of the two losses).

Break out your cliche-a-tron, because this is the biggest game of the season. A loss tonight, and I’ll be stunned if both teams return from Winnipeg this weekend.

Bold Prediction: A team will open the scoring in the first five minutes, then go on to win by at least three. Go Hitmen.

Hitmen Post-Game/Game Day: An Inauspicious Debut

Welp.

1 1 0 2
2 1 3 6

That could’ve gone better.

I was tempted to write a smart-assed tweet before the opening draw that, because of all the nice things I’d said about the Hitmen defence, they’d get outshot 40-20 and lose horribly just to spite me. I wasn’t quite on the mark – the Hitmen actually outshot Brandon 36-32 – but the “lose horribly” part was well in evidence, as Calgary dropped Game 1 by a mostly-earned 6-2 count.

The thing I really want to highlight here is just how terribly the defence played. To a man, they were blowing coverage, making blatant unforced errors (the two giveaways that led to the third and fourth goals), and generally running around like rookies. It was a highly disappointing and uncharacteristic performance that really left goalie Chris Driedger without much recourse. No, that second goal shouldn’t have counted, and yes, he might like one or two of those back ideally, but none of the goals were egregious sieve jobs as I’ve seen on some evenings. Driedger didn’t have a fantastic game, but I can’t fairly blame him for this loss. It’s the guys in front of him who didn’t do enough, and the Hitmen are going to need a much better and smarter effort from the D and from the leadership of the team (as you’ll see below, Jimmy Bubnick had a night to forget) if they want to avoid carrying an 0-2 millstone around their necks for the long bus ride to Manitoba.

The other thing that caught my attention was that Alex Roach dressed as a forward last night. I assume the Hitmen are short bodies, because Roach played in the bottom six, predominantly with Chase Clayton and #1 bantam pick Jake Virtanen. Roach acquitted himself well enough, though there were a few plays where he looked a little uncomfortable with the weird positioning. It’s not the first time head coach Mike Williamson has moved someone from their normal spot: captain Cody Sylvester took a few turns on D in the early season while the roster was getting sorted out.

Closure

I've put this off long enough.

So you may have noticed that I’ve yet to comment on the Memorial Cup, a week after the Hitmen’s ouster at the hands of the hated Brandon Wheat Kings. This is very much intentional. If you stalk me on the Internet, you may have caught wind of some rather bitter sentiments regarding the way the Hitmen went out, and I wanted some distance to see if I still felt the same way before saying anything long-form. The answer? Kinda, but not entirely.

Oilers Fire Some Guys

Accountability, motherfuckers!

I’m glad the Oilers fired two guys who schlepped bags and the one guy Souray said had nothing to do with his injuries or guys coming back early from injuries, instead of the people who constructed or coached the team to its worst position ever, and who apparently can’t even manage to tell prospects what the hell their plans are or what they’re supposed to be working on.

I wonder if Tambo will give another speech next summer about how things are going to change around here, Goddammit, and bang his shoe on the podium, and then fire the Zamboni driver and the Northlands Coliseum janitors. That’ll be fun.

Update: I’ve just been informed by Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini that my services will no longer be required as intermittent updater of this here blog. He thanked me for my years of service, and told me that while this was a move that had to be made for the future of the franchise, in his heart, I’ll be an Oilers fan forever.

For anyone who's keeping score

A look back at the great goaltending debate of 2009

The Oilers had a lot of things go wrong this year and as much as people like to bring up the cap I’m not convinced that it limited them this year and given that they’re planning to rebuild I’m not sure it limits them next year. However, at the beginning of the season a list was published of the best goalies of the last 3 seasons who were free agents, and what they were signed at. Let’s take a look again.

  1. Martin Biron: 77 wins, .914 SV% (10th) – 1 year, 1.4 million per season
  2. Ty Conklin: 46 wins, .911 SV% (18th) – 2 years, 1.3 million per season
  3. Nikolai Khabibulin: 73 wins, .909 SV% (23rd) – 4 years,  3.75 million per season
  4. Dwayne Roloson: 70 wins, .909 SV% (25th) – 2 years, 2.5 million per season
  5. Mathieu Garon: 47 wins, .908 SV% (26th) – 2 years, 1.2 million per season
  6. Manny Fernandez: 40 wins, .907 SV% (27th) – unsigned
  7. Martin Gerber: 55 wins, .907 SV% (28th) – signed in the KHL
  8. Jason Labarbera: 25 wins, .907 SV% (29th) – 2 years, 1.0 million per season
  9. Manny Legace: 63 wins, .905 SV% (32nd) - 1 year, 0.5 million per season
  10. Olaf Kolzig: 49 wins, .902 SV% (36th) – unsigned
  11. Antero Niittymaki: 36 wins, .902 SV% (37th) – 1 year, .6 million per season
  12. Brent Johnson: 25 wins, .900 SV% (39th) – 1 year, .525 million per season
  13. Joey MacDonald: 17 wins, .900 SV% (40th) – unsigned
  14. Fredrik Norrena: 35 wins, .899 SV% (43rd) – signed in the SEL
  15. Curtis Sanford: 19 wins, .896 SV% (46th) – 1 year, .6 million per season
  16. Andrew Raycroft: 51 wins, .891 SV% (48th) – 1 year, .5 million per season
  17. Curtis Joseph: 26 wins, .889 SV% (49th) – unsigned
