For anyone who's keeping score

A look back at the great goaltending debate of 2009

The Oilers had a lot of things go wrong this year and as much as people like to bring up the cap I’m not convinced that it limited them this year and given that they’re planning to rebuild I’m not sure it limits them next year. However, at the beginning of the season a list was published of the best goalies of the last 3 seasons who were free agents, and what they were signed at. Let’s take a look again.

  1. Martin Biron: 77 wins, .914 SV% (10th) – 1 year, 1.4 million per season
  2. Ty Conklin: 46 wins, .911 SV% (18th) – 2 years, 1.3 million per season
  3. Nikolai Khabibulin: 73 wins, .909 SV% (23rd) – 4 years,  3.75 million per season
  4. Dwayne Roloson: 70 wins, .909 SV% (25th) – 2 years, 2.5 million per season
  5. Mathieu Garon: 47 wins, .908 SV% (26th) – 2 years, 1.2 million per season
  6. Manny Fernandez: 40 wins, .907 SV% (27th) – unsigned
  7. Martin Gerber: 55 wins, .907 SV% (28th) – signed in the KHL
  8. Jason Labarbera: 25 wins, .907 SV% (29th) – 2 years, 1.0 million per season
  9. Manny Legace: 63 wins, .905 SV% (32nd) - 1 year, 0.5 million per season
  10. Olaf Kolzig: 49 wins, .902 SV% (36th) – unsigned
  11. Antero Niittymaki: 36 wins, .902 SV% (37th) – 1 year, .6 million per season
  12. Brent Johnson: 25 wins, .900 SV% (39th) – 1 year, .525 million per season
  13. Joey MacDonald: 17 wins, .900 SV% (40th) – unsigned
  14. Fredrik Norrena: 35 wins, .899 SV% (43rd) – signed in the SEL
  15. Curtis Sanford: 19 wins, .896 SV% (46th) – 1 year, .6 million per season
  16. Andrew Raycroft: 51 wins, .891 SV% (48th) – 1 year, .5 million per season
  17. Curtis Joseph: 26 wins, .889 SV% (49th) – unsigned

The Oilers Diaspora (Updated)

So a while back, I got to thinking, just how many former Oilers are out there in the NHL this year? With the way players move around these days, it seemed to me there’d be quite a few; when I looked into it, I discovered that the number is actually closer to “a fucking lot of them.” Restricting it just to players who were at one point Oilers property (no Chris Higgins or Milan Lucic) and who have played at least one game in the NHL this year (no Mike York or Krys Kolanos) still turned up 53 of them (Edit: Make that 56.), from farmhands on a cup of coffee (Guillaume Lefebvre) to future Hall of Famers (Chris Pronger). Here they are, broken down by current team. (Edit: Updated as of this year’s trade deadline, March 3.)

Dear Oilers,

I’m a pretty big fan.  I’ve even supported the idea that you could be a great team with some minor personnel changes and playing as a team.  This is not the time to start doing that.

I’ll admit, even in the middle of January I was hoping for a repeat of Quinn’s undefeated streak (35 games) which could have propelled you into the playoff picture.  However, doing the math today shows that even if you win every game between now and the end of the season you’d be lucky to get 8th spot (with 96 points).  This is not the time to win.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you should actively try to lose.  At this stage of the game if you break .500 for the rest of the season you’re still only likely to drop down to 3rd pick.  And while, yes, Toronto getting first pick would entertain me bitterly (I believe you’re aware that their pick goes to Boston this year) and I realize that there’s no real clearance between the first and second prospects this season it should be up to you to pick between Daigle and Pronger.  You don’t want to obsess over what might have been.

No, I actually don't write anymore…

Look, folks.  Let’s face facts.  The Oilers fucking suck this year.  I tried to hold out optimism as long as possible, but after seeing them drop seven of eight and fall into the Western basement, and looking at the amount of other shit I could be doing instead — Hitmen season tickets, podcasts, magazine subscriptions, TV shows, video games — to say nothing of work and school, it became pretty easy to let this one slide.  But since I’ve been watching the World Juniors, anyway, I figured I might as well keep tabs on the Oilers prospects in the tournament: Jordan Eberle (CAN), Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson and Anton Lander (SWE), and Teemu Hartikainen and Toni Rajala (FIN).  I’ve been posting daily(ish) updates on C&B, listed below.  Enjoy.

About Last Night…

Two Alberta teams started the night with 5-0 leads.

One played uninspired hockey down the stretch but held on for the big 6-1 victory.
One choked like Linda Lovelace’s understudy and lost 6-5 in overtime.

Can you match the team to their result? There will be no prizes.

Postscript: Two things.

  1. Well-earned assist by former Hitman T.J. Galiardi on the short-handed game-winner by some guy I’ve never heard of. Galiardi basically dug the puck out of a pile of four Bruins, then dished it off to David Jones, who buried it. It’s plays like that that convince the coach you should stay for the year.
  2. A minor programming note: Originally, I intended to write a piece on players who have suited up for both the Canadiens and the Oilers, from Glen Sather to Marc-Andre Bergeron, to coincide with the first Oilers-Habs game of the year and Bergeron’s signing with the Canadiens, but that was not meant to be, between midterms and a hard drive crash. Hopefully, it’ll be done in time for the next game (March 11), but I make no guarantees. ;) In the meantime, I’ve got another project on the go that I hope to have in the approval stage from my external source soon. Stay tuned?
