I have to admit, I’m kind of baffled by the decision to sign Mike Comrie. I mean, his skill set is replicated in the lineup by two or three different players already, players who are younger and have higher ceilings at this point in their careers. I’m no prospectphile, who always favours potential over proven ability, but it seems to me like this isn’t the right move for this year, while we’re still sorting the wheat from the chaff on the roster. Lowetide covers the basic implications, and I think the idea that this is the first of a couple of moves is probably the most interesting one. If signing Mike Comrie means packaging Nilsson and/or Schremp and/or picks for something we need, then it certainly could become a good move, but as it stands right now, I’m kind of baffled. It’s certainly plausible, even likely, that none of Blair Betts, Manny Malhotra, or (former Oiler) Michael Peca were signable, but it’s irksome nonetheless that we’re going to be going into camp trying kids in important checking roles while bringing in vets to displace other kids in their areas of strength. I’m in wait-and-see mode right now, but my gut reaction is that this is kind of a crazy move. Hopefully, I’m wrong.
(Insert obvious Hilary Duff joke here. It’s late and I’m tired.)
