Where have you gone, Marty Reasoner? A nation turns its lonely eyes to you. Woo woo woo.
It’s back! The ex-Oilers and ex-Habs trackers are here again for 2010, covering all the free-agency moves and minor-league goaltending you can handle. Note that I’m only adding people who made their respective NHL rosters, though I’m keeping the rest in hand in case they get called up later in the year. Here we have the listing (complete so far as I can determine) of all the ex-Oilers in the NHL as of the end of October 2010, where they are now, and what the details of their stay(s) with the franchise entailed. Lots of turnover this summer (and thank God for some of those moves), and two retirements of note: Georges Laraque and Kirk Maltby. I deliberately waited until the end of the month so we’d see a few borderline cases (Dany Syvret, Ryan Potulny) get call-ups, though not all of the ones I anticipated (hello, Marc Pouliot) made the cut. Also, this only counts actual NHL appearances: Dany Sabourin wearing a ball cap on the end of the bench for a couple of games won’t cut it.
The companion list of ex-Habs can be found here.

Accountability, motherfuckers!
I’m glad the Oilers fired two guys who schlepped bags and the one guy Souray said had nothing to do with his injuries or guys coming back early from injuries, instead of the people who constructed or coached the team to its worst position ever, and who apparently can’t even manage to tell prospects what the hell their plans are or what they’re supposed to be working on.
I wonder if Tambo will give another speech next summer about how things are going to change around here, Goddammit, and bang his shoe on the podium, and then fire the Zamboni driver and the Northlands Coliseum janitors. That’ll be fun.
Update: I’ve just been informed by Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini that my services will no longer be required as intermittent updater of this here blog. He thanked me for my years of service, and told me that while this was a move that had to be made for the future of the franchise, in his heart, I’ll be an Oilers fan forever.

A look back at the great goaltending debate of 2009
The Oilers had a lot of things go wrong this year and as much as people like to bring up the cap I’m not convinced that it limited them this year and given that they’re planning to rebuild I’m not sure it limits them next year. However, at the beginning of the season a list was published of the best goalies of the last 3 seasons who were free agents, and what they were signed at. Let’s take a look again.
- Martin Biron: 77 wins, .914 SV% (10th) – 1 year, 1.4 million per season
- Ty Conklin: 46 wins, .911 SV% (18th) – 2 years, 1.3 million per season
- Nikolai Khabibulin: 73 wins, .909 SV% (23rd) – 4 years, 3.75 million per season
- Dwayne Roloson: 70 wins, .909 SV% (25th) – 2 years, 2.5 million per season
- Mathieu Garon: 47 wins, .908 SV% (26th) – 2 years, 1.2 million per season
- Manny Fernandez: 40 wins, .907 SV% (27th) – unsigned
- Martin Gerber: 55 wins, .907 SV% (28th) – signed in the KHL
- Jason Labarbera: 25 wins, .907 SV% (29th) – 2 years, 1.0 million per season
- Manny Legace: 63 wins, .905 SV% (32nd) - 1 year, 0.5 million per season
- Olaf Kolzig: 49 wins, .902 SV% (36th) – unsigned
- Antero Niittymaki: 36 wins, .902 SV% (37th) – 1 year, .6 million per season
- Brent Johnson: 25 wins, .900 SV% (39th) – 1 year, .525 million per season
- Joey MacDonald: 17 wins, .900 SV% (40th) – unsigned
- Fredrik Norrena: 35 wins, .899 SV% (43rd) – signed in the SEL
- Curtis Sanford: 19 wins, .896 SV% (46th) – 1 year, .6 million per season
- Andrew Raycroft: 51 wins, .891 SV% (48th) – 1 year, .5 million per season
- Curtis Joseph: 26 wins, .889 SV% (49th) – unsigned

So a while back, I got to thinking, just how many former Oilers are out there in the NHL this year? With the way players move around these days, it seemed to me there’d be quite a few; when I looked into it, I discovered that the number is actually closer to “a fucking lot of them.” Restricting it just to players who were at one point Oilers property (no Chris Higgins or Milan Lucic) and who have played at least one game in the NHL this year (no Mike York or Krys Kolanos) still turned up 53 of them (Edit: Make that 56.), from farmhands on a cup of coffee (Guillaume Lefebvre) to future Hall of Famers (Chris Pronger). Here they are, broken down by current team. (Edit: Updated as of this year’s trade deadline, March 3.)

Some more idle thoughts I’ve been collecting over the past week or so:
- I haven’t heard Kevin Lowe’s comments yet, but after listening to both Comrie and Tambellini speak, the main themes they’re going for are redemption (Comrie) and competition for roster spots (Tambellini). Tambellini did confirm that the Oilers were slightly over the cap with this move, though it sounds like that should take care of itself once the 23-man roster is settled upon. Interestingly, Tambo kind of ducked the question of whether Daryl Katz was willing to bury a contract in the minors. Conspiracy theorists, start your engines. Weirdest thing: Terry Jones, of all people, asked the question about why it had to be Comrie, and not someone grittier or more defensively inclined. Stopped watches and all that, I guess.
- The one thing that did occur to me as I thought about it this morning is that, if the deal is for a little over $1M, then at least Comrie has a good chance of outperforming it, and on a team with a bloated contract or three, that’s nothing to sneeze at. And I have to admit, something that lights a fire under a few asses is never a bad thing.
- In non-Comrie news, from a few days ago, it looks like Alex Plante will formally be “former Hitmen defenceman Alex Plante,” and will be graduating to pro, likely the third pairing in Springfield, per comments by Assistant GM Kevin Prendergast during the opening days of rookie camp. As an Oilers fan, I’m happy, but as a Hitmen fan, I was secretly hoping he’d come back as an overager and captain the team and provide some guidance for the younger D. After a tumultuous start to last season, Plante came on strong and, while Postma and Stone were checked into the ice and/or hurt during the playoffs, he stepped up and led the team in defensive scoring. Congrats to Plante for the promotion.
- Speaking of the Hitmen, they unveiled their new Reebok Edge jerseys, and…eh. They’re not as poorly-designed as the Oilers’ jerseys, but they still have that half-stripe bollocks on the sleeve and no striping on the hem, which I’m sorry, but that’s not how you do a fucking hockey sweater. It could’ve been a lot worse, though, and I at least don’t think I’ll mind how they look on the ice; heck, the black under the arms of the white jersey could even be a really nice touch. That being said, I’m sticking with my classic black Hitmen jersey. As an aside, I wonder if this will affect the look of their Teddy Bear Toss jersey, and whether I might want to make a swift investment before they disappear altogether?
